If you hold a muscle statically at its point of tension for a period of time, the inverse stretch reflex will kick in and the muscle receptors become accustomed to the new length and reduce the amount of signalling.
This relaxes the muscle and allows you to gradually train your stretch receptors to allow greater lengthening of the muscles and take the stretch further.
